Schemes help to improve water skills

-

OVER recent months many swimming initiatives have been created that have resulted in over 78,000 people taking part in water based activities on Anglesey between April 2014 and March 2015.

One of the initiatives to promote swimming was the Foundation Phase swimming lessons for 34 of Anglesey’s Primary Schools in Llangefni, Holyhead and Amlwch Leisure Centre between Easter and July 2015, funded by the Free Swim Initiative.

Mike Dilworth, Aquatics Development Officer for Anglesey said: “Providing these lessons has been key to improving children’s confidence in the water and to improve their water skills. Anglesey along with Wales is working to achieve the Welsh Assembly and Sports Wales target (that every child in Wales is able to swim by the time they leave Primary School), and we hope to build on this success when they start attending swimming lessons with schools in the future. To encourage more families to come along to the facilities, all three leisure centres provide one hour of Free Family Swimming sessions every weekend, provided that the children are members of the Anglesey Leisure Card Scheme.”

Mike added: “We also offer Swim for Free, for children and young people with disabilities together with their families and carers, offering an exclusive session every Saturday afternoon at Plas Arthur Leisure Centre, Llangefni.”

Plas Arthur Leisure Centre, Llangefni, provides an exclusive swimming session for the Llangefni Age Well group every Tuesday afternoon during the school term, and Amlwch Leisure Centre provides swimming sessions every Tuesday evening for Môn Independents which is a friendly group for adults with disabilities.

Amlwch Leisure Centre also offers SwimFit sessions.
