Pesda win close one

-

A DECENT-SIZED crowd at a sun drenched Llyn-y-Felin witnessed Menai Bridge beat Harlech in an entertaining Division Two North match.

Menai raced into a 10-0 lead, courtesy of a penalty and a converted try from prop Jack Owens.

In his first game back in nearly a year, Owens barged his way over the Harlech try-line from the back of a lineout, fly-half Vaughan Francis converting from a tight angle.

Harlech replied with an unconverted try just before half time.

The second half as the first ended, with Harlech pressure seeing them gain the upper hand in possession and territorial advantage.

Thus it was no surprise to see them take a 12-10 lead through a converted try.

The last quarter of the match saw Menai take control and two tries from substitute No8 Dafydd Healy ultimately won the match. His first try saw him drive his way over in the corner after a series of dynamic rucks from the pack.

Up stepped Menai’s man of the match Francis to brilliantly convert from the touchline.

Healy’s second try saw him barge over the line after text book mauling from his pack.

Flanker Rhys Thomas and centre Dave Williams also stood out for the Bridge. A FAST and close match at Dôl Ddafydd saw Bethesda edge a 23-20 victory over Llangefni in Division One North.

Both teams played an open game but in the end the Pesda forwards managed to prevent Cefni from snatching a draw at least.

Bethesda went ahead with a Ricardo Bueloni penalty before the visitors struck with a Greg Horsman try close to the posts. Llyr Hughes kicked the conversion.

The hosts struck back almost immediately when Gethin Long was on hand to finish off a strong break by Arwyn Griffith, Bueloni adding the extras.

Hughes kicked a penalty goal to even the scores but Bethesda had the last word when Rhys Williams scored a try which was improved by Bueloni, making it 17-10 at the turnaround.

Bethesda looked comfortable in the second half before a careless pass was intercepted by Aled Jones who ran clear to score between the posts. Hughes boosted with the boot, making the scores equal once more.

Bueloni added two more penalties to Hughes’s one, and although the visitors made a great effort to secure a result the home defence proved too strong at the end.
