AGRANDMOTHER of four is celebrating 50 years working for the NHS and has worked at Ysbyty Gwynedd since it was built 1984.

Beti Moyle, 74, from Pentraeth, still works part time as a receptionist in the emergency department of the Bangor hospital because she loves her job so much.

Her career with the NHS started age just 20 on August 12, 1961 at Mill Road Maternity hospital in Liverpool - a date she remembers very well.

But her history with hospitals does go back even further.

As a youngster Beti would go in to hospitals to play music and keep patients entertained but she kept fainting when she saw someone too ill.

Beti said: “It was my mum who told me to do something about it. It was just silly I was there to help not make things worse.

“My mum said to me “you should get a job there and sort it out” and I saw an advert in the paper and that was it.”

Beti had four years off to have two children and then, in 1978, applied for a transfer and moved to Anglesey.

She has been working at Ysbyty Gwynedd since it was opened in 1984 and still relishes going in to work although now it’s just a part time endeavour.

She said: “When you hear so many people who don’t want to work it surprises me. I enjoy every minute of it.

“I find it very interesting but I know some people think I’m crackers.

“A lot of stuff has changed over the years, I’ve had to learn about computers at an old age but I’ve got used to it.

“I will miss it very much when I do eventually go but I’m not thinking about doing it any time soon.”

The grandmother of four added: “When you get to know so many patients they are always asking about me, if I’m still working.

“My husband jokes I’m the oldest receptionist in Gwynedd.”

Lynne Roberts, Matron in the A&E department at Ysbyty Gwynedd said: “Beti is a very valuable member of the Emergency Department team and we are honoured that she still chooses to work for us part-time.

“Beti is to be congratulated on her service with the NHS.

“It is an amazing achievement and on behalf of all her colleagues, and patients – past, present and future – we give her our best wishes and look forward to continuing to work with her.”
