ANGLESEY Soroptimists recently celebrated their 50th anniversary lunch which differed in only one way from the photographs of the first Charter lunch (right) andthat was hats!

The first meeting was held at the Trearddur Bay Hotel in 1965 at a cost of 15 shillings per head.

The gavel that was used at the first meeting to bring to order the cocophony of members, and can be seen in the hand of the first President Mrs. Iris Henry, is still in good use today.

New President Rhiannon Jones and members are also preparing a comprehensive history of the Anglesey club over the years and noted that when the Club was founded in 1964, there were 23 members. Today the Anglesey club proudly boasts 39 members.

This year, the longest serving member of the Club, Miss Rhiannon Jones has taken over the reins as president to lead the celebrations and carry on with the good work that has been achieved over the last half a century. Rhiannon has been a member herself for 40 years.

Locally, recent activities undertaken by SI on Anglesey include lobbying the Government about cuts in services to Women’s Refuges, tending the gardens at Cefni Hospital, and raising funds for the Air Ambulance through a Rhys Meirion concert.
