Caravan plan at Holyhead Breakwater Country Park

PLANS have been filed to build more than two dozen caravan and motorhome pitches at a peaceful country park in order to boost council coffers and help keep it open.

A planning application has been submitted to Anglesey Council, via landscape consultants Richards, Moorehead and Laing, to build 28 pitches at Holyhead Breakwater Coun- try Park.

The application originates from Anglesey Council countryside department, as the authority itself owns and maintains the land.

They say the application will “generate additional income” which will be used at the park.

The money-making scheme also includes the building of a shower block and a new access road at the park, which opened in 1990.

Anglesey Council’s website says the park, situated on the site of an old quarry, “captures the scenic beauty, history and natural appeal of Anglesey all on one site and has a great deal to offer”.

However the authority have already moved to dampen fears the development will ruin the much-loved space, popular with birdwatchers.

An Anglesey Council spokesperson said: “We can confirm that a planning application has been submitted by the Council for 28 pitches for motor homes and touring caravans at Breakwater Country Park in Holyhead.

“The application itself recognises the sensitivities of the Holyhead Breakwater Country Park; in terms of its wildlife; heritage and popularity with local residents and alike.

“The pitches have therefore be sited in an area of the park not used by the public and in need of improvement.

“This facility would allow visitors to bring their own touring caravans to the park and enjoy its tranquillity and scenic beauty.

“With local authorities across Wales facing financial chal-

visitors lenges, this project, if permitted, would allow the authority to generate additional income to help sustain the financial future of the park and provide visitors with an opportunity to stay in the area and spend in the locality.”

It is not currently known when the application will go before Anglesey Council planning committee.
