Premises sold booze to 15 year old subject

-

RETAILERS and offlicences are being warned to be vigilant when selling alcohol to young people.

This comes after four people were fined for selling alcohol to an underage volunteer during a series of summer test purchases carried out by Anglesey Trading Standards.

A 15-year-old volunteer visited 44 off-licensed premises across the island in a bid to buy alcohol.

As a result, most retailers were commended for acting responsibly with staff asking for ID, to check proof of age.

But six premises failed the test purchase with another three narrowly passing despite failing to ask for ID.

As a result, four people who sold alcohol to the volunteer each received a £90 penalty charge notice.

Other investigations are continuing with follow up visits planned for all premises causing concern.

Chief Public Protection Officer, David Riley said, “Underage drinking is one of the main causes of the anti-social behaviour seen on our streets.

“Most retailers are acting responsibly but there’s still a small minority that fail to implement the correct policies and they’ve recently had to deal with the consequences.”

Any retailers who would like advice, training or guidance on age restricted products and preventing underage sales should contact Anglesey Trading Standards on 01248 752840.
