Payback time for Medd at Llandegai

-

A SCENE of heartbreak last season turned into one of joy for Llannerchymedd as they recorded a 4-2 victory at Mynydd Llandegai in the FAW Trophy.

At the end of last term, a defeat at Mynydd ended Medd’s promotion hopes from Welsh Alliance Division Two, but last Saturday’s Trophy result saw the mood reversed for the Anglesey side.

Two late crackers from Deion Evans and Matthew Jones secured a payback victory in a thrilling match against the Mountainmen.

Despite missing several key players, the visitors started the better with some cracking runs by Jones down the centre.

Jones was twice unable to convert slide-rule passes from Jamie Ryan and new acquisition from Amlwch, Chris Byast. Byast himself came close minutes later, his header sailing just over.

Llandegai themselves had numerous chances, the lively Matthew Smith and Jamie Roberts going near. Another Medd signing, keeper Peter Finn, produced a cracking reaction save from a deflected shot.

Mynydd upped their game at the start of the second period and were level when a misstimed Tomos Jones tackle led to a penalty which Mark Hughes converted.

In the 56th minute the hosts were awarded a second spotkick which Hughes again put away for 2-1.

The character of the Medd team is now on an upward spiral, each week the performance improves, and despite conceding two soft penalties their heads did not drop.

On 66 minutes Gethin Jeffries bundled over Byast in the area and Matthew Jones made it 2-2.

Llannerchymedd were now on top and in the 83rd minute a thunderous 30-yard free kick from Deion Evans proved too powerful for keeper Morris to keep out and it was 3-2.

Llan sealed it when Matthew Jones, with amazing skill and accuracy, chipped the keeper from the acutest of angles to complete the victory which put Gareth Parry’s side into the next round.
