Gaerwen upset the odds against neighbours
GAERWEN manager Mark Queen was a proud man after his team upset the odds with a 5-2 victory at neighbours Llanfairpwll in the FAW Trophy last weekend.
Although Gaerwen are bottom of Welsh Alliance Division Two they played like a team worthy of a far higher placing against their Division One opponents, who have been showing signs of a revival this season. Queen said: “It was a great performance from every player today, I’m chuffed for them all.
“It was a well-deserved victory based around a solid defence, a battling midfield and good finishing up front, but teamwork more than anything else. What we’re doing in training is starting to show.”
Gaerwen were determined to make a good start at Maes Eilian and they certainly got it, scoring twice within the opening 10 minutes.
Darren Lewthwaite broke the deadlock before recent high-profile signing Mel McGinness added a second.
Gwyndaf Davies knocked in a third before the interval to put the visitors firmly in command.
After the break Llanfair raised their game and a double from Dylan Williams reduced the deficit to a single goal.
However, Gaerwen were not to be denied and when McGinness made it 4-2 on 75 minutes they had one foot in the next round.
And Lewthwaite made ultra sure of the win when he added a fifth.
