BCFC look to avenge double loss in Aber clash

BANGOR City will feel they are overdue a victory against next opponents Aberystwyth Town, who visit the Bangor University Stadium this Friday (7.30pm).

Last season the Citizens were twice denied a win over Ian Hughes’s side by 90th-minute equalisers. At Park Avenue, City came back from two-down to lead 3-2, only for Aber to salvage a point through a controversial injury-time penalty.

And in the return at Nantporth, the all-blues twice led before former striker Les Davies unluckily deflected into his own net to allow the blacks and green to escape with a share of the spoils.

Bangor were due to host gap Connah’s Quay last night (Tuesday) and will have been aiming for a positive result to take into the Aber test.

Last Friday saw City slip to next bottom in the Welsh Premier League after a 3-0 defeat at Bala Town, who finished the weekend top of the table.

Neville Powell’s side competed well with the Lakesiders before the hosts notched three goals in the closing stages.

Powell felt the final outcome was not a true reflection of the game.

“The score flattered Bala, it wasn’t a 3-0 game,” said the City chief.

“There was nothing in the game before they scored from a free kick with just over 10 minutes to go.

“Bala are going to be top two or three with the squad they have.

“We played very well against them in the first half, we hit the woodwork twice and when you go to places like Bala you’ve got to take your chances.

“The two substitutes they brought on, Mark Jones and David Thompson, made all the difference.

“We conceded from a 25-yard free kick and then after we gifted them the second goal there was no way back.

“Bala is a really tough place to go, but before the first goal went in there was nothing in it.

“It had been another good away performance from us up until then.”

It eventually proved a disappointing night for the Citizens who were unable to build on a promising 15-minute spell of pressure before half time that saw Ryan Edwards rattle the home woodwork.

The travellers also hit the post during the half, while Rio Ahmadi and Christian Langos were also not far away.

At the other end, Mark Connolly went close just before the break but was unable to capitalise from close range.

Ex-City striker Lee Hunt had the ball in the net but was ruled offside.

The visitors were disrupted when winger Langos suffered a knee injury early in the second half, after which the Lakesiders started to control possession.

After pushing for a breakthrough, their efforts were rewarded with 11 minutes remaining when substitute Mark Jones beat keeper Connor Roberts with a curling free kick from the edge of the box.

Fellow replacement David Thompson doubled the advantage for the Maes Tegid outfit from close range when he capitalised on a defensive calamity by the visitors with three minutes remaining.

Former Wrexham and Wales player Jones claimed his brace with a neat finish in injury time when he worked the ball onto his left foot before finding the bottom corner.
