Calendar for cancer support

- BY GARETH WYN WILLIAMS garethwyn.williams@trinitymirror.com

CANCER survivors from across Gwynedd and Anglesey are coming together to produce a charity calendar to support others battling the disease.

Medwyn Huws knows more than most about its dreaded effects having lost a sister, Morwenna, aged just 39 following a long battle with breast cancer.

But he was dealt a further blow last month when his wife, Vicky, was also diagnosed with the condition aged just 32.

She’s currently recovering from a procedure at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd which saw one of her breasts removed.

Prior to her death, Morwenna had set up a charity Mo’s Moos, to help other cancer sufferers on the island, with several thousand pounds having been raised thus far.

Now, a group of survivors are coming together to produce a calendar which will showcase the individual stories of those who fought the terrible condition to provide inspiration for others.

The funds raised from its sale will also go towards the setting-up of Wrth dy Ymyl (By your Side) which will offer support to cancer patients across Anglesey and Gwynedd.

Medwyn, who’s originally from Llanddeusant but now living in Holyhead, said: “We were devastated to lose Morwenna in 2013, having battled so hard.

“A lot of painful memories came flooding back when Vicky was diagnosed, but we’re both fortunate to have family and friends who have rallied around.

“Luckily, Vicky was able to access the latest diagnostic technology at Glan Clwyd that allowed her lymph nodes to be tested instantly, which meant she was able to be rushed straight to theatre.

Medwyn is now trying to raise awareness of the RD-100i OSNA system, which spares sufferers the agony of having to wait up to three weeks to see if their cancer has spread.

He hopes that the system can be rolled out across Welsh hospitals.

As part of this, a number of brave volunteers have now agreed to pose for a “calendar girls” type shoot over coming weeks.

The end product is set to be launched during a special evening on November 6 at the Trearddur Bay Hotel.

Medwyn continued: “The calendar will be provocative but tasteful and we’re fortunate that a number of businesses have already come forward to help.

“Sysmex, which has developed the new technology, are sponsoring the evening while the venue has been kind enough to host us free of charge.

“Shan Williams of the A5 barbers and Jade Goddard from the Beauty Lounge are also helping out with the hair and make-up.”

Sponsors for the individual months are still being sought, however.
