SPIRIT OF BRO ABERFFRAW: On Thursday January 28 the Spirit of Bro Aberffraw Panel hosts a community event. Come to learn more about how this programme has, and could, help support local people and projects. The Community Foundation in Wales will hold a Funding Fair between 1-6pm at Llys Llewelyn Tea Rooms. Local charities and community groups can talk to the Foundation’s grants team about funding opportunit­ies. Call 02920 379580 to book a specific time slot or just pop in on the day. From 5.30pm in Aberffraw Village Hall there will be a celebratio­n of what the Spirit of Bro Aberffraw programme has achieved in its first year. Community groups and projects which have already received funding will talk about what they have done. There will also be taster sessions of indoor community sports activities led by Active Young People Young Ambassador­s and a representa­tive from Cycling Wales. and takes place every Wednesday at 7pm at the Quaker Meeting House, Dean Street. BANGOR CHRISTIAN SPIRITUALI­ST CHURCH: The Church was establishe­d in 1947 and is affiliated to the Greater World Spiritual Centre, London. Services at 7pm every Thursday at the Quaker Meeting House, Dean St with free refreshmen­ts after the Divine Service. There is no admission fee, only a free-will collection taken during the Service. Its aims are to provide welfare and key services for visually impaired people in North Wales. The event is part of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, and people can call in for five minutes or stay for several hours to consider what it is like not to have a home, and how we can help those who are displaced. There will be informatio­n about local and internatio­nal groups who help refugees. SOROPTIMIS­TS: The speaker on January 19 was Jim Coy, North Wales Anti-Slavery Co-ordinator. He gave an interestin­g but harrowing account of what ‘modern day slavery’ is all about and how close it is to us here in Bangor. Modern Day Slavery (or formerly Human Traffickin­g) is the second most profitable crime in the world, second only to drugs. It is also a growing crime in the UK with victims exploited in main ways – forced labour, sexual exploitati­on, domestic servitude and benefit fraud. The North Wales Anti-Human Traffickin­g Project is the first of its kind in the UK, with more than 40 agencies, including all six North Wales Authoritie­s, Welsh Government, North Wales Police and charitable partners, working together to end one of the oldest and most insidious forms of human exploitati­on. WI: Beaumaris WI are changing their meeting day from 1st Friday of the month to 2nd Monday in the month at the David Hughes Centre at 7pm. OVER 50S: The St David’s Day meeting on February 29 includes Mrs Griffiths, the pianist, who will entertain by playing and speaking about well known classical composers and their music, followed by the ever popular afternoon tea. On March 2 there is a coach trip to the Galeri in Caernarfon to see “The Lady in the Van”, a very popular film. The coach will leave the pier at 12.30pm and will be back in time for tea. Due to Easter being early this year, the March meeting is on the 21st. Easter Eggs all round and cash prize bingo. April 25 Roy English will give a talk on the Great London Riviera Marathon. So, fill up your diaries and see you soon! BEAUMARIS WI: The first meeting of 2016 included a demonstrat­ion of aloe vera creams and potions. The meeting on Monday, Feb 8 will not only be of interest as members hear about the origins of Annie’s Orphans, but should be great fun as they watch the intrepid male models on the catwalk afterwards!
