LLANGEFNI would appreciate a big turnout when they entertain Division One North high-flyers Bala this Saturday at Cae Smyrna (2.30pm),

The Anglesey side need all the support they can muster in their battle against relegation.

Last weekend saw Cefni beaten 31-15 at Ruthin, but they were well in contention up to the 55-minute mark before the hosts’ greater propensity for playing expansively and their superior overall fitness led them to a deserved bonuspoint win.

Two knock-ons by the visitors gifted the early momentum to Ruthin, who after waves of relentless attacks took the lead with a Phil Roberts penalty.

Cefni were certainly up for the physical challenge as they took the game to the hosts via their pack.

They spurned two kickable penalty attempts as they kicked twice for the corner. The visitors pounded the hosts’ line, when possibly a fast release into midfield would have paid better dividends.

When Ruthin’s Roberts failed with a longish attempt at goal, Cefni were quick to release Aron Evans from deep in the 22. His excellent run to the opposite 22 allowed the islanders to camp in the red zone and pressurise a poor Ruthin scrum which led to Sior Grieves being released on the narrow side to scamper over in the corner.

Unfortunately, Cefni messed up the kick-off when they got turned over on their 10-metre line, leading to Kyle Davies finding the space to cross for a try, which Roberts converted.

Rhys Hughes replied with a penalty, but Roberts replied, making it 13-8 to Ruthin at half time.

When a few penalties went Cefni’s way, Rhys Hughes found touch deep into enemy territory. Prop Jordan Scott smashed through a few would-be tacklers and the away scrum walked their adversaries backwards.

A penalty was awarded, which Declan Griffiths took quickly to power his way over for a try which Hughes converted to make it 18-15.

However, for the second time in the game, Llangefni mismanaged the kickoff, eventually leading to Sion Roberts crossing wide on the right.

The next score would be crucial and it was Ruthin who provided it, Phil Roberts landing a penalty.

Now desperate for a bonus point, the hosts threw everything into attack and from a late five-metre scrum Jamie Jones crossed for the final score of the match.
