Sillence scores six for Valley in 10-0 triumph

-

JEROME SILLENCE bagged a sixgoal haul for Valley in their 10-0 demolition of Bodorgan in the Anglesey League’s Lucas Oil Dargie Cup.

Sillence moved up to 18 goals for the campaign with his double hattrick in this second-round tussle which also saw Spaniard Borja Plana Lorenzo score twice, with further goals from Justin Hughes and Justin Williams.

Bro Goronwy may be way ahead of the rest in the league but they came a cropper last Saturday in the Bwlch Car Boot Trophy away to Llangoed & District, who beat them 3-1 in a Group A encounter.

It was Llangoed’s final group game and the hosts had more to play for, knowing a loss would eliminate them from the competition and send Bro into the final.

On a testing length of pitch Llangoed showed more determination and spirit in a thoroughly deserved victory over the league leaders.

However, it was the visitors who took the lead in the third minute.

Andy Swindells fed striker Sam Roberts, whose low shot was turned around the post by Rhys Owen.

The resulting corner travelled low through the crowded penalty area to allow Gareth Owen a simple finish.

Llangoed soon levelled, Wayne Thomas connecting from a square pass to send the ball floating over Jonny Sweetser-Hawkes into the net.

Thomas and striking partner Craig Jones both shot over as the home side pressed, and after 32 minutes Llangoed took the lead.

Mitchell Jones’s shot was parried away by keeper Sweetser-Hawkes only for referee Derek Owen to adjudge that the ball rebounded onto defender Chris Hough’s hand.

Craig Jones stepped up to send the stopper the wrong way from the spot.

Bro applied pressure in the remain- ing 10 minutes before the break but could not find an equaliser, Roberts firing off target and then, after more neat set-up play from Swindells, Jac Thomas denied under the crossbar by a last-ditch intervention.

Goronwy winger Cole Whittle stung Owen’s gloves early in the second period, but Llangoed’s passion did not allow Bro back into the tie.

Thomas should have put the game to bed, heading over and then firing a snapshot at Sweetser-Hawkes.

Goronwy’s substitutes looked to turn things around but failed to get past the glovesman, Graham Jones’ shot saved by the stopper’s feet.

It was left to Llangoed’s substitute, John Riley, to finish the game, forcing the ball home from a tight squeeze at the near post.

Bro still had a chance in stoppage time to reduce the scoreline and, like the previous Saturday, Andy Williams earned and took the resulting penalty.

The difference this week was that his kick flew high and wide, to leave Bro still needing four points from their last two group matches to book a place in this season’s final.
