Llangefni target 12 matches unbeaten

-

LLANGEFNI Town will aim to make it 12 league matches without defeat when they host Penrhyndeudraeth tonight (Wednesday, 7.30pm).

Nine points clear at the Welsh Alliance Division One summit, Cefni will be targeting a league double over Penrhyn, where they won 3-1 at the start of the campaign.

However, Chris Roberts’ side will also be wary of the fact they went down 4-1 at home to this evening’s opponents in the Cookson Cup last November.

Town tuned up for their latest league encounter with a 2-0 triumph at Division Two outfit Llannerchymedd in the Mawddach Challenge Cup last Saturday.

Both sides were in Division Two last season, but while Cefn clinched pro- motion, ‘Medd narrowly missed out.

Iwan Jones converted a penalty in the 20th minute to give Town a halftime lead with his 15th goal of the season.

In the second period a Sean Pritchard strike doubled the lead to give Llangefni the victory.

Cefni began well and controlled the possession but were unable to find a way past a stubborn Llanerchymedd defence.

Chances fell to James Saxon, Steve Jones and Paul Rowlands, who were unable to add to the goal advantage provided by top-scorer Iwan Jones’ spot-kick going into the break.

The second half began in a similar fashion with Llangefni dominating.

In the 59th minute, Pritchard doubled the lead with a superb shot after being picked out by Dafydd Jones.

Further chances came Cefni’s way but despite being in control, no further goals came.

Llangefni manager Roberts, who made five changes to the side that beat Llandyrnog the previous week, said: “I was impressed with 16-yearold John Alex Jones, who made his senior debut today.

“Cai Powell Roberts was excellent at the back and Dafydd Jones had a really good game in midfield, together with the established Gari Owen.

“We played most of the second half with four under-18 players.

“It shows how strong the squad is and that the youngsters are coming through to the senior set-up.’’

Pentraeth of Division Two caused an upset when they beat Division One Gwalchmai 1-0 at the Bryniau.

Corrig McGonigle settled the issue with a second-half strike – his 41st goal of the campaign.

Amlwch Town went down 1-0 at home to Mochdre Sports, Craig Roberts with the deciding goal.

Llanfairpwll led Llanllyfni 3-0 with 10 minutes remaining, with goals from Shaun Davies (2) and Dylan Williams – but still ended up losing.

Llyfni fought back to 3-3 and with no further goals in extra time it went to penalties, the visitors prevailing 5-4.

Mynydd Llandegai were outplayed by Llanrug United, who triumphed 4-0 thanks to Jon Sadler, Dylan Owen (2 pens) and David Noel Williams.
