New signing Llion is a two-goal hero

-

NEW signing Llion Jones grabbed a double for Llannerchymedd in their 2-1 win at Gaerwen last Saturday.

This Welsh Alliance League Division Two island derby was due to be played at Tan Parc, but with ‘Medd’s pitch unfit, Gaerwen agreed to an 11th hour switch to Lon Groes.

After a barren spell, Llannerchymedd are beginning to show some promise again under new management team Tomos Jones and Medwyn Evans.

Midfielder Deion Evans stood out for the visitors, despite having spent the early part of the week off work with flu.

Llan struck first in the third minute when player-manager Tomos Jones floated a lovely pass to Llion Jones on the right. Llion Jones took the ball past defender John Owen and fired past advancing keeper Mike Bentley, his effort trickling into the net.

It was a scrappy affair overall but Gaerwen, seeking a first league win at the 14th attempt, played some nice football when they could, albeit for no reward.

The pacy Llion Jones was constantly getting flagged offside, but it finally came right for the front man in the 63rd minute.

When the ball was sent over the Gaerwen defence, Jones pounced and chipped over Bentley for 2-0.

With top-scorer Matthew Jones out injured, ‘Medd will be happy to have found another nippy goal-getter up front in Llion Jones.

Tristan Jones pulled one back for Gaerwen and the home side pushed hard for an equaliser, but it was not to be.

The result edged Llannerchymedd up to eighth, while Mark Queen and Mel McGinness’ Gaerwen side remain bottom.

Llannerchymedd expressed thanks to Gaerwen chairman Mathew Thomas for consenting to the late change of venue.

‘Medd are due to play away to Llanllyfni this Friday, the match set to take place on Bangor City’s 3G pitch (7.30pm), while Gaerwen are scheduled to visit Mynydd Llandegai on Saturday.

Llangefni Town Reserves are through to the Craig Bragdy Chal- lenge Cup semi-finals after a resounding 8-2 win over Holyhead Hotspur Reserves at Talwrn Road.

A much-strengthened Cefni certainly benefited from the inclusion of first-team strikers Craig Evans and Anthony Hughes.

Hughes and Evans both notched hat-tricks for the home side, who led 4-0 at half time.

James McMinimee added a double for Llangefni, while Josh Batson and Sam Hellas replied with late consolations for Hotspur.

In the same competition, Trearddur Bay Reserves were beaten 3-1 at undefeated Llanberis Reserves.

A Tom Hadley goal had the Bay level at half time, but strikes from Ryan Owen, his second of the game, and Dafydd Evans sealed it for ‘Beris.
