Bike racing will soon be back at celebrated Anglesey Circuit

-

THE 2016 motorcycle racing season at the Anglesey Circuit gets underway on Sunday, March 13, with a race meeting organised by the Wirral Hundred Club.

The club’s championship calendar comprises three further visits to Anglesey and one to Oulton Park, with all modern bikes from 100‐1000cc catered for, as well as older pre‐injection and classic machines and the ever‐popular sidecars.

Welsh riders have tended to be the men to beat at Anglesey in recent years, but it is likely there will be opportunities for others this year.

Jay Harris from Holyhead has been the dominant force in the 600cc category in recent seasons, but this year he has a new sponsor and a brand new bike and is set to concentrate his efforts on the British Supersport championship.

He may therefore miss a meeting or two at Trac Môn, in which case the likes of Barry Evans from Amlwch, his confidence boosted by his second place in the 2015 Newcomers Manx Grand Prix, and regular front‐runner Jamie Devine from Broughton, are sure to benefit.

In the 1000cc Powerbikes class, brothers David and Matthew Jones from Colwyn Bay were the 2015 pacesetters, but like Harris they are set to miss some local meetings – this time because they are joining forces and trying their hand at endurance racing.

Again this may open up opportunities for others.

The 100‐500cc class again has had Welsh domination in recent years with the Bryn Taff team‐ mates Darren Jones from Llanrug and Bryn Owen from Caernarfon almost untouchable.

This year, however, they are likely to face stiff opposition from 15‐year-old Dan Jones, who hails from Mold.

Injury sidelined the talented teenager for most of last season, but this year he is concentrating on the British Motostar championship, and also intends competing at all of the Wirral Hundred meetings.

The Anglesey Circuit, situated between Rhosneigr and Aberffraw, is one of the most picturesque and spectacular venues for motorsport in the UK.

The bike meetings regularly attract 150 to 200 riders from all parts of the UK, the Isle of Man and Ireland, providing spectators with a multitude of races and great entertainment.

The Wirral Hundred club is currently on a recruitment drive to attract biking enthusiasts to its marshalling ranks.

Anyone who is interested in assisting at any or all of their race meetings can get in touch either via any existing marshal, or via the contact names on its website www. wirral100.co.uk.

No previous experience is necessary; advice and training in all aspects of marshalling will be provided.
