It’s nice to help others!
CHELSEA WILLIAMS, 21, of Penmaenmawr is busy studying for a degree in mathematics, but in her spare time she loves to sew and her goal is to have a wardrobe full of clothes that she has made herself.
Although she only really began sewing in 2014, she discovered a passion and flair for it, and now writes an easy-to-follow sewing blog (sewdarnneat.co.uk), and also, along with two other sewing enthusiasts has also set up Wrap Pyjama Fairies, where volunteers make cost-free, specially designed pyjamas for youngsters who are in hospital (wrappyjamafairies.co.uk). Chelsea tells us more:
As a child I was always crafty. I loved saving up bits of rubbish and turning them into my treasures. Then in 2014 and going into my second year at university, I decided I wanted my uni room to look nice and cosy so decided to make bunting. I guess this was my first sewing project.
I bought a fat quarter bundle, white ribbon and white lace trim and handsewed it all together. The feeling of self-satisfaction after making it was great and I wanted to sew more.
A crafty friend asked if I’d watched the Great British Sewing Bee. I hadn’t, but found series one and two and then watched both within two days!
For Christmas 2014 I received my current machine (Ditsy) and my sewing journey began.
My favourite thing so far has to be the dress I made for my niece. I spent a lot of time making sure that the finish was as good as I could get it. Seeing her run and twirl in it was so nice!
I’m currently making an Easter basket out of piping cord and I’m also working on a pair of pyjamas for a Wrap Pyjama Fairies order. I think pyjamas pants are such a good project for beginners, as you get to practice sewing curves, and if they aren’t perfect, you will only be wearing them in the house. That’s probably why I love making pj’s for the Wrap Pyjama Fairies it’s such a stress-free sew!
