Mostert takes a half-century of league wickets

FRANCOIS MOSTERT became the first bowler in North Wales senior cricket to take 50 wickets this season as his latest five-for haul helped secure a crushing win for Bangor over Llanrwst last weekend.

The South African’s half-century of victims have come at a stunning strike rate of 15.92 and an average of just 9.00 apiece.

Mostert has added a more than useful 382 runs into the bargain for a Bangor side which cemented their place in third spot in the Premier Division with a 14-1 success against the Rwsters at Tŷ Newydd.

The Citizens are now just 10 points off leaders Llandudno, and with eight matches still remaining have establishe­d themselves as genuine title contenders.

The match was restricted to 28 overs apiece due to the wet weather and the hosts were invited to bat first.

They dipped to 8-2 early doors, but opener David Winter then smacked 61 off 56 balls and skipper Robert Marshall 46 not out as Bangor posted a very useful 172-6, Lee Thomas 2-33 for the Rwsters.

Wicket-taking machine Mostert hit the big 50 for the season with a haul of 5-12 off 5.5 overs as Llanrwst were skittled out for a mere 72.

Callum McCann pocketed 2-12 and Gareth W Edwards 2-14 for the hosts.

Champions Menai Bridge moved to within six points of table-toppers Llandudno, who lost at Brymbo, by beating Gresford at Tyn-y-Caeau.

In a match reduced to 32 overs per team, the away side were inserted by Bridge and found themselves limited to 113-8, Jack Bunkell top-scoring on 48.

Menai’s attack spread the wickets around, Ashley Wood with 2-14, Gerallt Roberts 2-17 and Gareth Thomas 2-28.

The Anglesey side sealed the spoils by making it to 114-5 in 27.4, opener Wood heading the chart with 49, Chris Ellwood grabbing 3-30 and Simon Parry 2-25 for Gresford.

Bridge claimed five-wicket triumph and a 12-3 verdict.

This Saturday sees Bangor face a testing trip to Connah’s Quay, while Menai Bridge visit Pontblyddy­n.

An astonishin­g match-winning unbeaten knock of 127 off 120 balls from opener Matthew Jackson led Bodedern to victory over Halkyn in the 1st XI Second Division.

The Anglesey villagers won the toss and put their Flintshire hosts into bat at Presaddfed Estate.

Halkyn set a decent total of 166-8 off 44 overs, Alex North top-scoring with 75, while for the hosts Ian Wyn Jones claimed 3-50, Edward Gadsby 2-3 and Leighton Williams 2-29.

It then became the Jackson show as the gifted player cracked 12 fours and eight sixes in his wonder innings, leading Boded to 168-4 off Picture: Richard Birch 33.2. Their best stand was 56 between the home hero and Sion Keir, who actually contribute­d 0 off 35 deliveries, but did a solid job supporting the senior batter.

Bodedern collected the points 13-2 and lie sixth in the 10-team division.

In the 1st XI First Division, Bethesda’s game at Carmel was cancelled due to the heavy weekend rain which either wiped out or affected several fixtures.

Bethesda seconds’ 2nd XI West Division tussle with St Asaph seconds, also fell victim to the weather – five points each.
