Glantraeth’s league campaign springs to life

-

GLANTRAETH will enter this Saturday’s FAW Trophy tussle at Llandudno Junction on the back of two uplifting league wins.

The latest came last Saturday when Warren Gibbs’ men triumphed 2-1 at Nantlle Vale.

Marvin Pritchard put the visitors ahead on 17 minutes as he prodded home after a Darren Gowans’ free kick had been blocked.

Glan came close to a second as James Burgess nodded against the bar and as the ball came back sent in another header that keeper Neil Perkins went full-length to save.

The second half began with a fine Gowans’ half-volley bringing a flying stop from Perkins in the home goal, but then it was Ben Heald at the other end called into action as he made fine saves from Aaron Hughes and Aaron Griffiths.

After surviving that spell of pressure, the visitors again began to look the most likely scorers with Kieren Jeffreys through only for the keeper to deny him point blank.

Eight minutes from time Glantraeth went two up when Jeffreys’ inch-perfect pass was arrowed home by the head of Craig Whelan.

Three minutes later Glan were caught flat-footed as Hughes made it 2-1, but that proved the end of the scoring.

Last Wednesday Glantraeth’s season exploded to life as they thrashed neighbours Llangefni Town 4-1.

Mike Lundstram, Marvin Pritchard, James Burgess and Sam Faulkner struck for the hosts, Paul Rowlands replied with a penalty.

Glantraeth had Jamie Jones and Faulkner sent off, Steve Kehoe red-carded for Cefni.

In Division Two, Llion Vaughan Jones scored a superb winner for Gaerwen in their 2-1 victory against Llannerchymedd, Chris Bennett the other home scorer, Sion Wyn Griffiths for ‘Medd.

Liam Willighan (3), Alwyn Roberts, Kev Roberts, Jamie Whitmore, Ian Owen and Mark Hughes led big-scoring Mynydd Llandegai to an 8-1 away blitzing of Pentraeth, Kevin Roberts replying.

Llanfairpwll went down 3-0 at Llanllyfni, while the derby between Cemaes Bay and Amlwch Town ended 1-1. Tam Morton converted for Cemaes, Ryan Jones for the visitors.
