Hotspur in home test

-

TWO teams will target a first win of the season when Holyhead Hotspur host Conwy Borough at the New Stadium tonight (Wednesday, 7.30pm), reports Gareth Davies.

The Harbourmen began the campaign with two draws but were beaten 2-0 at Guilsfield last weekend, while Conwy have lost all three outings to date.

Two first-half goals by Adam Jenkins, one a penalty, sank Hotspur at mid-Wales Guils.

The hosts applied early pressure, Jenkins forcing a good stop from keeper Paul Pritchard.

In the eighth minute, Guilsfield took the lead. Captain Gareth Jones delivered a perfect cross from the left to the far post where Jenkins had enough time to control and whip the ball home.

In the 23rd minute the hosts went two up. A fiery shot struck the post and rebounded to a home team player. The first effort was blocked but the second struck Kenleigh Owen, the referee ruling it hit his hand despite strong protests it made contact with his body.

Jenkins gave Pritchard no chance from the spot.

The Hotspur custodian denied Jack Richards, but on 31 minutes Jenkins had a chance of a hat-trick after Rhys Roberts was guilty of pushing in the area. This time his effort was pushed on to the post by Pritchard.

It was more of an even contest in the second half with the home keeper having to race out and head clear from Mel McGinness.

In the 67th minute a corner on the right by Owen saw Rhys Roberts’ header cleared off the line and another goalbound chance went wide.

This Saturday sees Hotspur visit newly-promoted Ruthin Town in a league game, followed by a trip to Welsh Premier club Llandudno next Tuesday, September 6, in the Word Cup.
