Girl airlifted to hospital after collision

A SCHOOLGIRL was flown to hospital with serious injuries on Thursday after being hit by a car in Anglesey.

The girl, named locally as Awel Jones, a year seven pupil at Ysgol Gyfun Llangefni, was struck at about 3.45pm at the junction of Bryn Pandy and Ffordd Corn Hir in the town.

She was flown to Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor following the incident but her condition is not understood to be life threatenin­g.

An eyewitness said a concerned crowd gathered around the youngster after the accident, which closed the B5109 for four hours.

Sergeant Emlyn Hughes of North Wales Police’s Roads Policing Unit said: “An investigat­ion is under way and we’d like to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the collision or events leading up to it.”

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokeswoma­n said: “We sent an emergency ambulance to the scene, where the crew were supported by a Wales Air Ambulance.

“A young female was airlifted to Bangor’s Ysbyty Gwynedd.”

Earlier in the afternoon, the North Wales Police control room advised motorists to find alternativ­e routes while emergency services worked at the scene.

Cllr Dylan Rees, mayor of Llangefni, visited the scene. He said: “My heart goes out to the family who are going through any parents’ worst nightmare right now.”

A spokesman for Ysgol Gyfun said: “This is a difficult time for the pupil and her family and we wish her a full and quick recovery.

“The school is also offering counsellin­g support to the pupils following the incident yesterday afternoon. The whole school community are supporting one another during this difficult time.”
