It’s a most wonderful time of the year for two-goal hero Andy

-

TWO first-half goals from Bro Goronwy’s prolific marksman Andy Williams was enough to guide the team to a 2-0 win over Menai Bridge Tigers in the second round of the Gwynedd League Safeflue Shield.

It did not take the home side long to grab control of this cup tie, albeit with a helping hand, after only eight minutes.

Tigers stopper Lee Moore spilled the ball out of his grasp for the alert Connor Jones to jump on the chance, his pass allowing Williams to smash home for 1-0.

Bro’s wide man Callum Thomas was at times rampant, running at pace to leave Bridge’s defence at sixes and sevens.

Andy Wannop sent a dangerous cross across the face of goal in search of a leveller but it was Goronwy who ground out the chances up to the break.

Connor Jones and Sam Regan both headed off target from corner routines before Williams put Bro in command on 38 minutes.

Graham Jones won the crucial midfield header to put Bro straight back on the attack and Williams won the race to gain the ball before the outrushing glovesman, finishing with a confident left-footed strike into the empty net to double the home side’s advantage.

Williams came close to a dream first-half hat-trick, only denied by Moore’s low full-length fingertip save to his left to crucially divert the ball around the post.

Man of the match Thomas stung Moore’s hands early in the second period looking for a tie-clinching goal that never came, but Menai could never gain any momentum or a stronghold in the match to see them come close to any parity.

Williams misjudged a far-post volley before Taylor Jones’ acute flick came close to beating Moore.

With the visitors having no options but to gamble late on they finally threatened the home goal, Wannop watching his effort easily cleared off the line before Owain Roberts tried his level best, firstly bouncing a 25-yarder off the crossbar and then only thwarted by Jonny Sweetser-Hawkes’ low save to safety.

Bro comfortably cruised to the final whistle to cap off a thoroughly rewarding year with a derby victory in their final match of 2016.
