Holyhead win two on bounce for the first time

- Huws Gray Alliance

HOLYHEAD Hotspur completed back-toback league wins for the first time this season when they beat Guilsfield 2-1 at the New Stadium last Saturday, reports Gareth Davies.

And the Harbourmen will be going all out to make it three out of three with a trip to face struggling Conwy Borough next Tuesday (December 27, 2.30pm).

Seeking revenge for a 2-0 loss at Guilsfield back in August, Hotspur went close on 14 minutes when Mel McGinness struck the crossbar and soon after Alex Jones headed over from a corner.

The mid-Wales visitors were quick on the break, and on 27 minutes when Danny Barton laid the ball off well to Sam Littleford, keeper Paul Pritchard got down smartly to snuff the danger out.

In the 29th minute Mike Kelly’s shot for Holyhead was eventually scrambled away, before at the other end Mark Davies again brought Pritchard into action.

However, on 42 minutes the visitors took the lead.

A free kick wide out on the right by Jack Richards at pace was quickly latched on to by Louis Irvine, who hooked first time into the far corner.

Hotspur caught the visitors cold with the equaliser just after the restart.

Dan McGinness released brother Mel down the right, and he quickly dispatched a super cross behind the back four to the unmarked Corey Jones, whose shot had enough to beat keeper Dave Littleford despite him getting something on it.

One sensed the next goal by either side would be decisive, with the experienced campaigner Barton leading the line well for the Guils and with Hotspur’s Mel McGinness his usual menacing self. So it was perhaps a surprise that it was Gavin Sharpe who would be the hero.

Nothing looked on when, from more than 25 yards he expertly executed a curling effort into the top corner for a classic winning goal.

In the remaining minutes Guilsfield let their frustration get the better of them and captain Gareth Jones was shown the red card for violent conduct.
