Top-form Town stun leaders with Luke goal

-

AMLWCH Town produced one of their best results of recent years when they won 1-0 at Welsh Alliance Division Two leaders Llandudno Albion last Saturday.

The Anglesey side rose to the occasion on the magnificent 3G pitch at Maesdu Park, ending Albion’s 100 per cent home record of seven straight victories.

An even first half saw Albion edge possession as they moved the ball quickly on the immaculate surface, but the hosts were limited to a couple of long range efforts that went wide of visiting keeper Harvey Williams’ posts.

Their best chance came when the home forwards failed to get on the end of an inswinging cross from the left.

Amlwch created a couple of half decent chances but did not really trouble the home keeper.

Town started the second period the livelier side and pressed Albion back into their own half. Jamie Jones had a free header from a corner but nodded over.

Luke McGivern had throughout the first half looked for an opportunity to get in behind the Albion defence and his chance came in the 58th minute as he raced clear and slotted past the keeper into the bottom corner for his 11th goal of the season.

Albion now took the game to Amlwch but failed to open up the visiting defence as they found captain Jack Carter and centre-back partner Geth Roberts in fine form to keep out the free-flowing scorers who had netted 17 times in their three previous games.

Albion were awarded a penalty for handball in the 68th minute but Williams saved heroically from the spot.

Amlwch should have gone two-up when McGivern glided past two defenders but his shot went narrowly wide in the 83rd minute. Town always looked a threat on the break as Albion pressed for the equaliser.

Amlwch’s game plan worked and made the hosts look poor at times but the Albion still remain favourites for the title.

The result pushed Town up to fourth in the table with a visit to Mochdre Sports, the team immediately below them, to come this Saturday.
