Tigers into last four after win over Bont

-

MENAI Bridge Tigers celebrated a fantastic 6-2 victory away to league high-flyers Bontnewydd in the quarter-finals of the Bob Owen Memorial Shield.

Bridge raced into a 4-0 first-half lead, Gareth Barker knocking in the opener after brilliant work from Ryan Wood.

Wood added a second before Barker completed a brace. Callum Davidson’s perfect cross was then tapped in by Tim Evans.

In the last minute of the half a goal from Bont’s Rhys Roberts was allowed to stand despite an apparent foul on keeper Lee Moore.

After the break a beautiful finish from Dave Roberts and a second for Ryan Wood put the Tigers out of sight.

Shaun Jenkins (2), Jordan Taylor and Shane Boylan guided Bodedern Athletic into the semi-finals with a 4-2 win over Nefyn United.

Beaumaris Town lost 3-0 at home to Talysarn Celts, while Blaenau Reserves versus Bethesda Athletic was postponed.

In the Gwynedd League, Gary Bolton (3), Adam Hallybone and Andrew Jones ensured Aberffraw swept aside Harlech Town 5-2.

Bro Goronwy’s ever-improving season took a further step forward when they made it six matches unbeaten with a 2-1 triumph at Llanystumdwy.

Both keepers were in fine form in the first half, Bro’s Jonny SweetserHawkes and Caron Hughes for Llan producing some fine stops.

The home supporters were in raptures after 31 minutes, Bradley Williams racing onto a long ball over the top and sliding his finish under Sweetser-Hawkes and into the net to put Llan 1-0 to the good.

Hughes denied Jac Thomas and was quickly down to save Dylan Jones’ header before Bro deservedly levelled.

Sam Regan’s free kick was met by a Williams flick-on to leave Taylor Jones to put the ball past Hughes and into the corner of the net.

‘Stumdwy applied all the pressure in the opening exchanges of the second period, but gallant defending and some agile goalkeeping on a sticky pitch somehow kept the home side from regaining the lead.

With a little under 10 minutes remaining the ever-reliable Andy Williams popped up with what would turn out to be the winning goal for the Anglesey side.

Chasing on to a through-ball, Williams confidently volleyed over the grasping Hughes into the roof of the net.

Callum Thomas’ mazy run came so close to finalising all the points for Bro, only for him to be crowded out in the six-yard box, and Connor Jones’ goalbound shot nearly released all the pressure, but Hughes again denied the youngster.

Regan’s last-ditch tackle kept Goronwy ahead and with strong determined challenges up to the final whistle, Bro came away with a thoroughly satisfying maximum reward.
