Llangefni’s perfect 10 earns spot in quarters

-

LLANGEFNI Town will the flag for Anglesey and the Welsh Alliance League in the quarterfinals of the FAW Trophy following last Saturday’s 10-0 home blitzing of St Asaph City.

Cefni have landed a home draw with FC Nomads of Connah’s Quay of the Welsh National League Premier Division for a place in the semi-finals.

The tie will be held at LÔn Talwrn on Saturday, February 11 (2pm kickoff ).

Llangefni, the only island team ever to win this competition back in 1991/92 when it was known as the Welsh Intermediate Cup, had lost 3-0 to the Saints in the previous meeting between the sides last season, but it was a totally different story last weekend.

A Craig Roberts hat-trick and braces from both Jack Williams and Sean Pritchard, added to goals from Paul Rowlands, Mathew Jones and Iwan Jones, made it a really comfortable afternoon for the hosts who could have scored above the 10 they managed.

Cefni got off to the perfect start when Rowlands finished well after only two minutes.

The lead was doubled in the 11th minute when James Saxon’s good work gave Craig Roberts the opportunity to make it 2-0 as he chipped the ball past his marker and hit a volley into the back of the net.

Chris Roberts’ side then scored a third with only 28 minutes played after a great team move was finished off by Mathew Jones.

It was 4-0 five minutes later when Craig Roberts unleashed a fierce shot from a good 40 yards out which found the top corner.

The goals continued in the second half and in the 46th minute Jack Williams tapped in from close range to make it 5-0, before Roberts powered in an unstoppable shot to complete his hat-trick.

Ten minutes later Williams scored his second of the match.

St Asaph then went down to 10 men after a second yellow card was shown to a player for something he had said to the referee.

Iwan Jones put away number eight in the 74th minute as he raced onto a great through ball from Pritchard to fire his shot into the bottom corner.

Substitute Pritchard made it 9-0 following a great bit of skill by Steve Kehoe. The Cefni sub then brought up double figures with a fantastic finish in what was nearly the last kick of the game, to ensure an emphatic victory for the Anglesey aces.

Llangefni host Abergele Town in round two of the Mawddach Challenge Cup this Saturday (1.30pm).

Meanwhile, Llangefni have completed the signing of Cory Williams from Caernarfon Town. Manager Chris Roberts is delighted to sign the former Hereford, Chester City and Colwyn Bay forward, who he rates very highly.
