THIEF’S TROLLEY DASH...

-

A BRAZEN shoplifter who filled a supermarket trolley with meat and left without paying has been jailed for 18 weeks.

Carl Andrew Davies had more than £150 worth of meat from the Lidl store in Holyhead last Monday, magistrates at Caernarfon heard.

The 31-year-old from Cleveland Crescent, Holyhead appeared from custody after he was arrested after two further charges of shoplifting on Tuesday.

Mel Hughes, prosecuting, said an assistant manager at Lidl had watched Davies fill up the trolley with meat and head out of the store.

“He was stopped in Llanfawr Road and claimed he had paid for the items,” said Mr Hughes.

On Tuesday staff at McColls in Cemaes Bay noticed Hughes put six bottles of Prosecco and two bottles of wine and several cartons of coffee in a basket and leave the shop.

Later that day he went to the post office in Llanfachraeth and stole meat and groceries.

Davies admitted three charges of theft, one of damaging the door of a police car and another of breaching an order preventing him from entering any Lidl store.

Glyn Roberts, for Davies, said he was trying to break a cycle of drug addiction and was making progress working in co-operation with CAIS.

“He regrets being before the court and his candid admissions to police show remorse for these offences,” the solicitor said.

Bench chairman Alwyn Lloyd Ellis said: “You are going into prison for these offences. It is the only sentence to protect shopkeepers.”

Davies was handed a six-week prison sentence for the three theft charges to be served consecutively. He was handed a four-week sentence for criminal damage and 10 weeks for breaching the order. These sentences to be served concurrently with the other sentences.
