Anglesey giants are both into last eight

-

RUTHLESS Glantraeth remain on course for a Welsh Alliance treble after making it nine wins on the bounce and 14 matches unbeaten with a 6-0 caning of Prestatyn Sports in the Mawddach Cup last weekend.

Leading the way again was the remarkable Corrig McGonigle, who made it 33 goals in 17 games since joining the club last September as he plundered his sixth hat-trick for Glan.

It was all too easy for Division One leaders Glantraeth, who had far too much class against a Division Two Prestatyn Sports side left fighting for nothing but pride.

The league’s leading scorer McGonigle put the home side ahead after just seven minutes as he neatly lifted the ball over the advancing keeper after being first to a delivery from Iolo Hughes.

On 21 minutes it was two as Kieren Jeffreys sent in a cross from the left with Marvin Pritchard determinedly winning possession to leave himself an open goal.

The visitors’ chances, already looking pretty bleak, further evaporated four minutes later as Dominic Donnelly cleaned out Jamie Jones without any attempt to play the ball and left referee Mark James with an easy red card decision.

Just on the half-hour mark a great ball from Sam Faulkner put McGonigle away, and as he pushed the ball past the keeper he was brought down before picking himself up to score from the spot.

It had been one-way traffic but the visitors did win a couple of free kicks at the start of the second half, the second from Paul Watts dipping just over for what was their best attempt so far.

Any chance of a fightback was put to bed on 54 minutes as McGonigle scored his 33rd of the season and completed yet another treble with a perfectly executed finish after good work on the right from Sean Davies and Harry Galeotti.

Eight minutes later McGonigle was the provider with a lovely chipped cross for Galeotti to nod home.

With 12 minutes remaining McGonigle was denied another by the crossbar but with time running out Sion Hogan blasted the ball high into the net to complete another convincing performance.

Llangefni Town also advanced to the Mawddach quarter-finals with a 4-0 home victory over Abergele Town.

Craig Roberts broke the deadlock with a 39th-minute header before Pic: ALED JONES Jack Williams added a second close to half time.

In the second half, Mathew Jones made it 3-0 to the Anglesey side and in added time Paul Rowlands put away number four.

Before the match a minute’s applause took place in honour of former Llangefni player Emrys Jones, who passed away last week.

Emrys was a crucial part of the Llangefni team which won three Welsh Alliance titles in the early 1990s and the Intermediate Cup in 1992.
