Two cup finals reached in one day by villagers

-

LLANGOED and District achieved the rare distinction of reaching two cup finals on the same day last weekend.

Vinny Walker’s side beat Valley 4-2 to qualify for the showpiece game in the Lucas Oil Cup and they also made it to the Bwlch Car Boot Trophy final after group rivals Mynydd Llandegai Reserves were unable to achieve the huge win required to pass Llangoed on goal difference.

Taking on a Valley outfit they had whipped 5-0 in the Dargie Cup Final a fortnight earlier, Llangoed started well but were unable to make the breakthrough and went close to conceding on the counter.

Then in the 40th minute Llangoed took the lead when Wayne Thomas finished off a Mathew Roberts assist from 12 yards.

Just before the break a good delivery from Nick Williams set up Thomas to lob the keeper for 2-0.

Llangoed continued to press after the restart and on 66 minutes a miss-kick from the Valley keeper fell straight to Mitchell Jones to roll the ball into an empty net.

On 72 minutes Valley pulled a goal back through Jerome Sillence, but soon man of the match Thomas completed his hat-trick after Jones was fouled.

Valley hit back again when Mike Williams latched onto a long clearance and headed over the advancing keeper to make it 4-2 on 83 minutes, but that ended the scoring.

In the other semi Holyhead Town overcame Bryngwran Bulls 5-0 to set up a final between the main Anglesey League title challengers.

Llangoed then anxiously awaited news from the Bwlch.Car Boot Group B match where Mynydd Llandegai Reserves had to beat Bethesda Athletic Reserves by nine clear goals to stop Walker’s warriors reaching the final.

It ended 7-2 to Mynydd so Llangoed go through. Liam Owen (2), Lewis Hall, Mike Holroyd, Stephen Bradie, Connor Jones and Colin Ball struck for Llandegai.

Llangoed manager Walker said: “Credit to both Bryngwran Bulls, who have had a fantastic first season, and Mynydd Llandegai for making it tough for both ourselves and Holyhead this season.”
