WHAT A MESS

Litter overflows at cemetery on Mother’s Day

- Shane Brennan

MOURNERS visiting an Anglesey cemetery got an unwanted Mother’s Day surprise.

Visitors who wanted to pay their respects at Maes Hyfryd Cemetery, Holyhead, were disgusted when they were confronted with overflowing bins in a litter-strewn grave yard.

One grieving son, Paul Williams, was appalled by the state of the cemetery.

He said: “There were lots of people coming with flowers for mothers and loved ones and they found the place in an absolute state.

“All the bins were overflowing and there was lots of rubbish including old Christmas wreaths, so that shows how long it has been since they were emptied last.

“There was rubbish blowing all over the graves. I had to dispose of litter from my mother’s before I could even put flowers down. It was so upsetting for everybody visiting.

“People were saying they were going to complain to the council, it’s just so lacking in respect for our loved ones. It was so bad I could not even put flowers on my mother’s grave because of the rubbish there.”

The town cemetery is run by the Holyhead Joint Burial Committee, which comprises Holyhead Town Council and Treaddur Council.

On their website, people who have family graves there are warned to make sure they maintain their plots in good order.

Cliff Everett, town clerk at Holyhead Town Council, apologised for the mess.

He said: “I was there myself on Sunday to put flowers on my mother’s grave but unfortunately it was beyond our con- trol. We were short-staffed last week due to an emergency illness and our contractor let us down as an extra bin was supposed to have been delivered but it did not turn up. It has been cleaned up now and I would apologise to all those families who have family in the cemetery.

“We will do everything to make sure it won’t happen again in the future.”
