PUPILS at an Anglesey primary school have been collecting items to help the victims of the devastating London flat fire.

To date 79 people have been confirmed dead in one of Britain’s worst fire disasters after an inferno swept through a London tower block last week.

Moved by the appeals for support, members of the school council at Ysgol Gymuned Rhosybol decided they wanted to do something to help. As a result of their quick action and the help of members of the local community, a van full of items made its way to central London over the weekend.

Miss Sara Jones, who coordinated the pupils’ efforts, said: “A few months ago we sent items to help the poor displaced people of Syria, but after seeing the terrible events on Wednesday, the school council felt it wanted to do something to help those caught up in the London fire. We’ve already collected over 20 bin bags of clothes, people have been so generous, especially with such short notice. And following an appeal for someone to help us get it down there, we’ve also had the offer of a driver and a van to get the items down there.”

Glesni Griffiths, aged 9, added: “Some of the children have lost everything in the fire, and don’t have any toys or clothes.

“After helping the people of Syria, we thought the people of London also need some help.”

The death toll from the Grenfell Tower fire rose to 79 on Monday, with Prime Minister Theresa May ordering a full public inquiry into the tragic disaster.
