MY CHRISTMAS MIRACLE BABY

MUM TELLS OF CHRISTMAS DAY BABY’S FIGHT FOR LIFE

- Mari Jones

THE first baby born on Christmas Day this year at Ysbyty Gwynedd has been described by her mother as a “little miracle” after she nearly died.

Molly Olivia Weston had to be rushed to the special care baby unit after she was born with her mum’s umbilical cord around her neck.

The 8lb 2oz baby was two weeks overdue when she arrived at 6.35am, and mum Jessica Lowe said it was “touch and go”.

The 25-year-old from Holyhead said: “Molly’s heart rate on the monitor was disappearing. The midwife worked out it must have been my umbilical cord: when I moved the heart rate was coming back as the cord was untangling.”

She said it was “frightening”, adding: “I was in agony. They were trying to use forceps, I heard one of the midwives saying it wasn’t going to work. I was convinced we were going to lose my daughter.”

Ms Lowe, who underwent an emergency C-section, added: “When Molly came out she wasn’t crying or anything. I couldn’t even do the skin on skin contact, she was just rushed off.”

Ms Lowe and partner Jamie did not know for hours how their daughter was doing.

“We were thinking the worst. Jamie went to take a photo for me, and she was just covered in wires,” she said.

But Molly made a strong recovery and spent the evening on the ward with her overjoyed mum for the first time on Wednesday.

“She is so beautiful and is my little miracle,” said Ms Lowe. “The staff have said she’s very strong. Last night when she slept with me, I just stared and stared at her – it was amazing to have her with me at last. She’s feeding really well, hopefully we will be able to go home soon. It’s been a terrible Christmas, but we are just so happy Molly is with us.

“Jamie’s dad is chuffed she was born on Christmas Day as he was also a Christmas morning baby in 1964 – he was featured in the Daily Post!”

There were 11 babies born in North Wales’s main hospitals on Christmas morning last year – seven at Wrexham Maelor, three at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd and one at Ysbyty Gwynedd.
