£100m MARINA PLANS: LATEST

DETAILED APPLICATION FOR SCHEME EXPECTED IN 2018

- Owen Hughes

THE developer behind a £100m marina development will push on with its plans in 2018.

Conygar Stena received outline planning permission in 2012 to build 326 homes, a 500-berth marina, retail, leisure, restaurants, hotel and office space on Newry Beach in Holyhead.

But the project was held up after the Waterfront Action Group (WAG) attempted to sink the plan by applying for the land to get village green status, which would keep the area free from development.

After an expensive public enquiry this was rejected this spring.

Now Conygar say they are preparing their detailed scheme, which would sit close to the existing marina, which is not connected to the new project.

A spokesman said: “The Judicial Review period ended in June 2017 and the decision is now completely free from challenge.

“We will now progress the detailed design and Reserved Matters application for the development over the coming year.”

Conygar believe the scheme (artist’s impression above) can bring major regeneration bene- fits to the town.

The company has already invested in a lorry park at Parc Cybi and has further plans on that site, linked to the construction of the Wylfa Newydd nuclear plant.

The firm is also behind an ongoing major retail project further east in North Wales, in Llandudno Junction.

In May 2016, Conwy County Borough Council approved its outline planning application for 90,000 square feet of retail floor space.

A Conygar spokesman said: “We continue to work in partnership with Conwy County Council as its preferred development partner to bring forward this 90,000 square foot retail park.

“We are in discussions with a number of national retailers.”
