Dundee calling tune over Cobra

-

BANGOR Rugby Club made sure they enter the international break on a high following a 27-20 home victory over COBRA in Division Two North last Saturday.

Having lost 12-0 at their Powys opponents back in October, the Citizens exacted revenge at Cae Milltir.

However, only the boot of the home team’s Nick Dundee made the difference as both sides scored three tries.

Bangor had the upper hand in the early stages and were rewarded when winger Dyfed Roberts took the ball off a defender and ran in for a converted try.

COBRA clawed back three points with a penalty from Will Worthington but Dundee cancelled this out with one of his own.

The visitors, at this stage, were doing most of the attacking and were rewarded with a try when they found an overlap for Richard Jones to score a sevenpointer and level the match at 10-10.

Bangor remained under pressure and COBRA took the lead with the last action of the half when Aled Humphreys got around the edge to ground the ball in the corner for an unconverted try.

The home side came out fighting in the second half and quickly narrowed the gap to 15-13 with a Dundee penalty.

COBRA brought on new No8 Jack Dukes, who quickly impressed with a power run from the back of the scrum straight down the middle for a try. Fortunately the conversion failed and with seven points to make up Bangor showed real fighting spirit.

Taking the ball deep into the visitors’ area, forwards Gruff Tudur, Mikey Roberts and captain Ryan Butler made a series of charges with scrum-half Dan Jones feeding them the recycled ball. Then it went out to Dundee who fed Gwyn Roberts a lovely ball which was then turned back inside to full-back Trystan Thomas, who crossed for a converted try to level the scores. The Citizens were now in the driving seat and Gwyn Roberts ran in a power try, carrying defenders over the line with him for the final touchdown duly conv verted by Dundee.

HOLYHEAD Rugby Club’s eight-match winning run came to an end w with a 33-5 defeat at new Division Three North leaders Teirw Nant (Nant Conwy seconds).

Ben Jordan scored a consolation try for long-time table-toppers Holyhead, whose man of the match was Paddy Maguire.

Full credit to Teirw Nant who were the better side in a game that was a fantastic advert for Division Three North rugby. The first 15 minutes saw an incredible physicality and intensity with both teams unwilling to concede territory over the gain-line.

Nant worked tirelessly at the breakdown and played with some great supporting lines to give them the edge and ultimately moved to the summit with a game in hand and only four matches remaining.

Holyhead still have three league games left and the Gwynedd Cup to play for.
