Island to host first comic convention

Bangor Mail - - NEWS -

ANGLESEY will host its first ever Comic Convention this summer.

The celebration of all things sci-fi and fantasy will take place in Beaumaris on June 9.

The event held at the the District Leisure Centre will see fans emerge themselves in the world of comics, film, media, art, literature, sports and music by dressing up as their favourite heroes.

Unlike major city centre comic events, no celebrity guests have been added to the Anglesey convention lineup, although visitors can enjoy trading stands, exhibitors and entertainment throughout the day.

And serious buffs imitating their favourite fiction characters can also take part in two cosplay competitions in front of a pannel of four judges.

The event is expected to attract more than 500 sci-fi fans from across the region.

It has been organised by David Barber, the founder of MSE Events who also holds an annual comic event at the Llangollen Pavilion, which takes place on July 22 this year.

He said: “Some of the most popular characters we see fans dressing up as every year is Deadpool, or Ironman, Captain America and Wonder Woman.

“So it would be great to see something different, perhaps some good characters from the new Black Panther.”

The 61-year-old who has been organising comic events across the North East and North West of England since 1973 added: “As this is the first one, the event won’t be as big as some comic conventions you see in big cities, we won’t have any big celebrity names on the lineup

“But we’re quite happy running smaller, community events at smaller venues.

“An event usually works based on where it is and after spending some time on Anglesey last summer, I was totally smitten with the place.

“We’re expecting more than 500 people, although the capacity for the leisure centre is around 1,000.”

A competition for children up to the age of 12 will take place from 11am before the second adult cosplay contest from 2pm.

Cosplayers will need to register their name and character on a cosplay entry form on the day as part of the competition.

Anyone interested in becoming a member of the cosplay judging panel should contact angleseycomiccon@ yahoo. com.

Tickets are priced £4 for adults and £2 for children. Family tickets including two adults and two children are available for £8.

They are available to buy online now from mseevents. or can be bought on the day.
