Minister visits Wylfa Newydd site
THE Minister for Welsh Language and Lifelong Learning, Eluned Morgan AM, visited Wylfa Newydd recently to hear about the work Horizon Nuclear Power is doing to protect and enhance the Welsh language and promote career opportunities for local people.
Visiting the site on International Women’s Day and during National Apprenticeship Week, the Minister was given a tour of the proposed Wylfa Newydd Power Station site to learn more about the project and discuss how the Horizon team is inspiring more women and girls to take up careers in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).
The Minister met some of Horizon’s female employees, including Nia James, from Dogellau, Gwynedd, and Sophie Wright, from Valley, Anglesey, both second year apprentices.
The Minister also met with Bethan Jones Parry, the independent chair of Wylfa Newydd’s Welsh Language Impact Assessment Steering Group. The group looks at how Horizon will manage the effects of Wylfa Newydd on the Welsh language while also identifying ways in which the project can protect the language for Anglesey, Gwynedd and Conwy.
Sasha Davies, Head of Strategic Development Wales at Horizon, said: “It was great to welcome the Minister to our site – particularly on International Women’s Day – and to show her some of the work we’re doing to encourage more women to take up the sort of careers our project is already creating. We have a lot of women on our team already, including several apprentices who are fantastic STEM ambassadors for younger people. We’re lucky to have such a talented and diverse team and we hope they continue to inspire others.”
