Plenty of goals around in island derby day showdowns

-

A CRACKING local derby saw Gaerwen edge a 4-3 victory over Aberffraw in Welsh Alliance Division Two.

Berffro started well but were unable to take their chances and had to pay when Dylan Williams put the hosts ahead from their first attack.

Aberffraw were quickly back in it with a fine finish from Connor Rees.

It was end-to-end now but Berffro took the lead with a deadly strike by Steve Jenkins from a corner.

Gaerwen kept plugging away against the strong wind and scored from a corner themselves via Liam Morris to make it 2-2 after 25 minutes.

Aberffraw edged in front again with a Matty Reynolds effort which found the net with the assistance of the wind.

The second half saw Gaerwen with their tails up and creating good chances with Berffro having to settle for the counter-attack.

The hosts were back on level terms after 70 minutes with a Morris thunderbolt from the left-hand side.

The visitors struck the post with minutes to go but it was Gaerwen’s day as a 25-yard special from Williams sailed into the net in the closing stages.

There was another fine island derby in Division Two between Llanfairpwll and high-flyers Amlwch Town.

It ended 2-2, Phil McGrath and Sion Owen on target for ‘Pwll, but replies from Sam Carter and James Burgess earning the visitors a point.
