Cefni dreaming of top spot after latest win

-

LLANGEFNI Town can cut the gap on Welsh Alliance Division One leaders Conwy Borough to two points with a game in hand if Chris Roberts’ side beat Trearddur Bay United at Lon Talwrn tonight (Wednesday, 7.30pm).

Cefni sparked life into their title bid with two wins in four days - beating Mynydd Llandegai 4-0 at home last Wednesday before recording a 3-1 triumph at Penrhyndeudraeth on Saturday.

Meanwhile, table-toppers Conwy dropped two home points in a 2-2 draw with Llanrug United last Wednesday, meaning Llangefni can overtake the Tangerines if they win their pair of matches in hand.

This Saturday will bring two more huge battles in the race for the champions with Cefni travelling to in-form Llandudno Albion, while Conwy visit undefeated Llanrug for a quick return clash.

Llangefni were in good form as they saw off hosts Penrhyndeudraeth 3-1 at Maes-y-Parc at the weekend.

Penrhyn missed a penalty before Matthew Jones broke the deadlock on the half-hour when he headed in a fine cross from Harry Galeotti.

Three minutes into the second half the visitors went two-up, Callum Mcminimee chasing a loose ball before finishing well.

Matthew Jones then added a third with a great strike.

Penrhyn replied with a late Carwyn Price spot-kick, but by then it was all academic.

Stunned by a 1-0 home loss to bottom side Nantlle Vale in their previous home outing, Cefni put things right by thrashing Mynydd Llandegai last midweek.

Manager Roberts made several changes to the side and they looked up for it from the kick-off.

Cefni took the lead after 22 minutes when Galeotti played in Gavin Sharpe who caught the keeper out by squeezing the ball between him and the near post from close range.

Cameron Jones made it 2-0 after 38 minutes when Galeotti once again provided an assist by firing the ball across the face of the goal for Jones to tap it into an empty net.

The third came just before half-time when Matthew Jones Picture: Dai Sinclair found the roof of the net with a penalty after Callum Mcminimee was brought down in the box.

Llangefni were in full control of the second half and scored the fourth on the hour when Mcminimee’s left foot cross was finished by Matthew Jones for his second of the game.
