Ref cancels match after mass brawl

-

A FOOTBALL match was abandoned after just 25 minutes when a mass brawl broke out between players, officials and fans.

The two Anglesey League clubs involved, Mynydd Tigers FC and Caergybi FC, were taking part in the Dargie Cup semi-final on the 3G pitch at Nantporth, Bangor, last week.

The match referee decided to abandon the game after the fight broke out and punches continued to be thrown and players were sent off even after the whistle had blown.

League officials called an urgent meeting to discuss the incident last week but they have refused to reveal details as the matter is still subject to appeal.

One fan who attended the match with his young son described the incident as “shocking”.

Asking not to be identified, the supporter said: “I can only describe what happened as shocking to say the least. Mynydd Tigers supporters stepped onto the pitch and were fighting with the Caergybi FC players.

“Both sets of players were fighting and throwing punches, the Mynydd Tigers officials were fighting and players’ families getting struck in the face with water bottles.

“The situation was so bad that the referee abandoned the game.

“I feel ashamed and horrified that my son witnessed this and feel it needs to be brought to the public’s attention.”

Anglesey League chairman Dennis Bryant, pictured, said the matter was reported to officials by the referee and an urgent meeting convened to discuss the matter. He said he couldn’t comment on the matter as there was still the possibility of an appeal but he said officials had to decide what to do with the cup tournament.

He said the matter would be further considered by the North Wales Coast FA in due course.
