Beaumaris take their revenge

-

HOLYHEAD Town moved three points clear at the Gwynedd League summit with a welldeserved 4-0 victory away to previous leaders Bro Goronwy.

It was a satisfying result for the Harbourmen, who had lost their previous two encounters with the Moelfre side this term.

Bro showed battling spirit but ultimately were not good enough as the visitors prevailed against an under-strength home squad forced into nine changes due to injury and commitments elsewhere.

Town came flying out of the blocks and Tom Hadley should have given them an early lead after rising at the far post but planting his six-yard header just wide.

Bro slowly fought back but lacked the composed pass from midfield into their front men all afternoon.

Against the run of play Bro could, and should, have taken the lead.

Rui Silva arrowed a free kick forcing Mike Bentley to save low at his post only for numerous home players waiting to finish off the rebound leaving it to each other as the chance went begging.

Ry Lees could not have connected any sweeter but shot over for the Harbourmen.

When Bro’s Carwyn Williams flicked on to Jac Thomas who calmly finished past Bentley, the home crowd were in raptures but it was to be short-lived as the assistant’s flag ruled out the goal.

Holyhead were gaining good positions out wide and troubling the home defence at times with accurate crosses and this was the key in taking the lead on 34 minutes.

A quick break down the right flank and cross resulted in Jordie Murphy hanging in the air before placing his controlled header past Jonny Sweetser-Hawkes into the net for a single-goal lead to the visitors at the interval.

Murphy forced SweetserHawkes into a point blank stop as Town went for a match-clinching goal.

Bro pushed for a leveller and were caught cold on the break on 68 minutes, Sion Davies taking on the defence at pace before slotting low into the net for a valuable 2-0 lead.

Goronwy had no answers to get back into the match and it was the Holy Island outfit that cemented the win with a further couple of goals to leapfrog Bro into top spot, albeit playing a game more.

Asa Thomas’ shot proved too hot to handle as the keeper parried only to see the ball drop into the net, giving the striker his 31st goal of the campaign.

And Thomas then turned provider as his outswinging cross found Davies at the far post, the youngster heading in from the narrowest of angles to seal the visitors a vital victory. BEAUMARIS Town pulled off a big shock in the Gwynedd League’s Bob Owen Memorial Shield, winning 2-1 at a Bontnewydd side which whipped them 6-1 the previous weekend.

Dean Redmond and Ben Roberts won it for Beau.

Menai Bridge Tigers did not fare as well, losing 2-1 at home to Waunfawr with Tom Parry on target for the islanders.

Llangoed & District lost 3-2 at Nefyn United in extra time in the Safeflue Shield semifinals.

A Mark Dunn own goal and Karl Pritchard netfinder kept the visitors in it, but Nefyn sealed the tie with a 119th-minute decider.

The Anglesey/Bangor a and District League’s Monday Division will get underway on Monday, April 8, with reigning champions Llangefni looking forward to a home e encounter with Bangor C City.
