Who will be next in the hot seat?

-

The AMs most likely to be in the running to replace Carwyn Jones as Wales’ First Minister: MARK DRAKEFORD Already being touted as the favourite, he’s the current Cabinet Secretary for Finance and leading on the Government’s Brexit approach.

Chances? From councillors to colleagues, there is universal praise for him. One source described him as “the cleverest man in Wales”. VAUGHAN GETHING Current Cabinet Secretary for Health.

Chances? As a father to a young son, having heard Carwyn Jones speak about the effect being First Minister has had on his family, he may think twice before putting his name in the hat. ELUNED MORGAN Currently the minister for Welsh Language and Lifelong Learning.

Chances? She would get a lot of support due to her experience and charisma. But as a regional AM she wouldn’t be guaranteed to still be an AM after the next election – unless Labour moves her to a safe seat. KEN SKATES Since May 2016 he has held the economy brief.

Chances? There’s a theory that Vaughan Gething, Ken Skates and Jeremy Miles are all similar figures, all representing a similar wing of the party. JEREMY MILES A Welsh speaker, he is the current Counsel General.

Chances? He’s definitely ambitious and has hinted at wanting to take a step up. HUW IRRANCA DAVIES The former MP for Ogmore and Chair of the Environmental Audit Committee.

Chances? Another left candidate, many believe it would be either he or Mark Drakeford who would stand. Has already said he will consider standing.
