Regan hits clincher as Bro reach a final

-

BRO Goronwy beat Waunfawr 2-1 to reach the final of the Gwynedd League’s Bob Owen Memorial Shield.

It was not the prettiest of games at times on a very testing surface, but Bro ultimately did enough to see them through.

Determined to halt their recent downturn in form, Goronwy started on fire, took an early lead and looked like they could run away with the match by the interval, but they failed to capitalise on all their pressure and allowed the Beganifs back into the contest at one-apiece come half time.

The second half was scrappy, but Bro had more of the knowhow to gain the honours under the shadows of Caernarfon Castle.

After a home corner flashed across the face of goal early on it was then the visitors who took charge and it did not take them long to find the back of the net.

Quick passing was the key to unlocking Waunfawr’s defence, Callum Thomas and Chris Byast combining well to leave Jac Thomas a calm seventhminute side-footed finish.

Callum Thomas failed to get enough on his connection in front of goal before Dan Fairhead’s marauding run fed Jac Thomas to round the keeper and plant the ball into the back of the net again only to be denied by an offside decision.

Jac Thomas was once again thwarted in the 44th minute, this time his close range header bouncing back off the foot of the post.

Deep into first half stoppage time it was all-square, Meurig Parry on the break smashing Waunfawr level with his shot off the underside of the crossbar.

Fairhead, with his forward runs in central midfield, was doing well to deal with some heavy home challenges and still managing to set up some attacking chances, Chris Byast’s shot deflecting wide and Connor Jones blazing over.

Bro literally had to keep their heads, numerous well-placed headed efforts failing to beat stopper Gerallt Bracegirdle.

Callum Thomas’ looping cross should have been executed better from Jac Thomas before Dylan Jones was also off target.

Slack defending so nearly let in Parry for another but eventually the danger was cleared.

The game decider came on 75 minutes.

Another Callum Thomas pinpoint corner found Sam Regan, whose header was tipped over by Bracegirdle’s fingertips.

However, from the resulting corner, Regan got his head in at the far post to make it 2-1.

Waunfawr pushed to the end but Bro booked their final spot where Nefyn United await at Caernarfon Town on May 18.
