Star Wars fanatic dad names twins for sci-fi favourites:

Bangor Mail - - SPORT -

WHEN mum-of-two Kerry Walker fell pregnant with her third child her husband Alex Walker already knew what they would be called - provided it was a boy.

The 36-year-old die-hard Star Wars fan had always wanted a son named after Luke Skywalker – the saviour of the galaxy far, far away.

But, due to some early complications, Kerry, 34, had an early scan and that was when they discovered they would be able to have BOTH Luke and Leia as Kerry was expecting twins .

So the couple had Luke Sky Walker and Leia Skye Walker – just like Star Wars heroine Padme Amidala.

But names like Padme and Yoda are lost on Kerry, who confesses to never having seen the space saga.

The mum-of-four insists she does know Darth Vader but Alex’s dressing gown in homage of the Sith lord might help.

Kerry, from Valley, Anglesey said: “I’m not a Star Wars fan.

“I watched the one, I think it was the one with the ewoks, when I was a child but I’ve never seen it since then, not any of the new ones.

“My partner wanted a son called Luke. We didn’t think of Leia straight away but it just made sense (when we found out we were having twins) and I do like the name.

“He (Alex) drives me mad with Star Wars stuff, he’s got the Darth Vader dressing gown and when the babies were born, they were premature and he used to say ‘may the force be with you’ - he’d have all the nurses in stitches.”

Alex and Kerry have known each other since they were teenagers, first dating when they were 17, before splitting for a few years and getting back together in their early 20s. Kerry, who has a son from a previous relationship and also a daughter, eight-year-old Charlotte, with Alex, said: “We had a scan and we were with the doctor and looked there was the other one.” The couple, originally from Manchester, were incredibly nervous when the twins were delivered at Ysbyty Gwynedd at just 34 weeks in April last year. But apart from Leia suffering from jaundice the pair were healthy babies and allowed home after a week. And what do other parents say when they are introduced to the Star Wars-themed twins? Kerry said: “We have had quite a positive reaction - but my sister has offered to pay for them to change their name by Deed Poll when they turn 18.

“Luke and Leia aren’t daft names, they’re nice and they both really suit them. The middle names might be a bit silly but no one really uses them.

“Other parents now call me ‘The Star Wars twin mum’ but I don’t know what half of the things are about, the references and sayings.”

Kerry may not have been mad about the names at first but has come round.

“It took me quite a while to get used to it but now it’s normal.”

The twins, who are now 13 months old, are starting to be a bit of a handful - but Kerry is managing.

“You do have to have eyes on the back of your head sometimes, especially with two of them.

“But they’re perfect, they’re full of energy. They’re great.”
