FILMED SEXUAL ACTIVITY WITH A PATIENT
Osteopath cleared of sex assault but warned he could be jailed for voyeurism offence:
AN osteopath has been warned he could be locked up after admitting a voyeurism charge. Michael George Hammond, of Llangoed near Beaumaris, is said to have covertly filmed a sexual encounter with a female patient at a clinic in Liverpool between 2007 and 2009.
The 61-year-old had admitted the charge when he appeared at an earlier hearing, but denied a separate charge of sexually assaulting another female patient at a clinic on Anglesey two years ago.
He stood trial at Caernarfon Crown Court on that charge but, after a three-day trial, the jury unanimously cleared him of the allegation.
Adjourning sentence for the preparation of a report by the Probation Service, Judge Huw Rees said he wanted to know more about Hammond.
“I need to know more about his background and the effect it may have on his employment,” said the judge. “He is at risk of going to prison.” Defence counsel Simon Mintz, replying to the judge, said Hammond had not been practising recently.
He asked for an adjournment so the Probation Service could investigate whether non-custodial sentences would be more appropriate.
Addressing Hammond, the judge said: “You have been found not guilty of the charge of sexual assault by the jury, but you have pleaded guilty to voyeurism.
“The case will be listed for sentence on August 9 but, by adjourning sentence, I am not giving you any indication of what that sentence will be.
“I am keeping an open mind. It could be custody or it could be something else.”
Hammond was remanded on conditional bail until the next hearing.
Outlining the facts of the voyeurism case, prosecutor Ffion Tomos said the video showed Hammond and the woman engaging in sexual activity on the treatment table.
“He appears to be treating her as normal and then begins to remove her underwear and massages her back and buttocks,” she said.
“The female has not been identified and police have not been able to contact her.”
She said the video came to light as a result of allegations made about Hammond following an incident alleged to have taken place in 2016.
