League’s top bowlers go head to head
BENLLECH’S green will host the North Wales Coast Bowling League’s annual President’s Day singles’ competition final stages this Saturday, starting at 2 pm.
All 40-plus teams in membership of the league’s four divisions are required to enter their top bowler in the prestigious event, which was won by Llanfairpwll’s Geraint Booth last season.
Mon-Menai, fresh from their title triumph in Division 6A of the Federation of Bowls Associations’ Championship, will be pitted against the best this Sunday in the Champion of Champions’ showdown.
The one-day event in Halifax will feature the seven division winners, plus best runners-up, in action in two groups of four teams playing on two greens.
Arranged on a round-robin basis, the competition will pitch Mon-Menai against Middleton from Manchester, St Helens from Liverpool and Doncaster.
Mon-Menai’s squad of 10 comprises: Gwerydd Buckland, John Short, Ryan Short, Stuart Thomas, David P Williams (all Bangor City), Keith Bailey, Barry Harris, Hefin Jones (Beaumaris), Geraint Booth, Dylan Williams (Llanfairpwll).
Several local under-18s’ bowlers contributed towards Wales’ convincing last-match victory over Derbyshire in the Drake’s Pride Junior County Championship, to safeguard their Premier Division status.
The home-and-away match, split between Llanfairpwll and King’s Newton greens, finished in Wales’ favour by 441-384 points, and 13-11 games.
Beaumaris A will finish runners-up at best in the Gwynedd Seniors’ League for another season, now that Craig-y-Don A have clinched the title with one set of fixtures left, taking advantage of their match-in-hand to trounce Llandudno A 8-1 and establish an unassailable 14 points’ lead.
Division A’s other results: Beaumaris B 4 Benllech 5, Dinas Criccieth 8 Conwy 1, Llandudno B 7 Llanfairpwll A 2, Llanrwst 5 Criccieth 4.
