THE inaugural Old Colwyn Christmas Market has received a £500 funding boost from the Co-op.

Taking place on 15 and 16 December, in Cefn Road, Old Colwyn, the event will include local craft and food stalls, Santa’s grotto, donkey rides, face painting and entertainment.

Cefn Road will be closed to traffic to allow the market to take place.

The donation – presented by Co-op stores in Cefn Road, Old Colwyn, and the community retailer’s petrol filling station and store in Abergele Road – will support the set-up costs of hosting the event.

James Owen, Store Manager of the Cefn Road Co-op, said : “As a community retailer, the Co-op is committed to working together to connect communities and bring people together – making a difference locally.

“We are delighted to be working closely with and supporting the organisers, it promises to be a fantastic event.”

AFUNDRAISING group from Mold has been commended for its 67 years of dedication to North West Cancer Research at the charity’s 70th anniversary awards ceremony.

The Mold-based fundraising committee for North West Cancer Research was handed the President’s Lifetime Achievement Award at the celebratory gala after raising more than £1million since 1952.

Presented by President of North West Cancer Research, Michael Potts, the accolade was awarded to the group to thank it for its efforts in holding fundraising events and community work to raise awareness of the charity and raise money for lifesaving cancer research.

Since its formation, the dedicated group has worked with the local community providing lunches, afternoon teas and charity balls. In 2012, to mark the groups 60th anniversary, fundraisers embarked on a year-long campaign to raise more than £60,000. They more than met this target through golf days and coast-to-coast walks.

The award commemorated both the group’s current mem- bers, some who have been with the charity for decades, as well as its past members.

During the awards speech, tributes were given to the inspirational Beryl Powell, former chair of the group, who passed away earlier in the year after a lifetime spent raising hundreds of thousands of pounds for North West Cancer Research and other good causes.

Beryl was a member of the Mold committee for 56 years and, for the 30 years she was chair, she the committee raised more than £800,000.

Sharon Knott, Chair of North West Cancer Research Mold committee, said: “The whole group was honoured to have received the President’s Lifetime Achievement Award. We all work very hard to raise money and it’s nice to be recognised for our efforts.

“Winning the award was also a great tribute to Beryl as she had such a big influence on making the Mold committee what it is today.

“As well as the hard work from all the committee members, we are very grateful to the community of Mold for their continued support at our fundraising events. With their help, we have raised £26,500 this year alone.”

The gala dinner honoured the efforts of the charity’s life-long fundraisers and researchers, who, together, have helped the organisation become one of the leading independent cancer research charities in the region.

In the last 18 years, the charity has supported £39m worth of research across the North West, supporting ground-breaking projects at University of Liverpool, Lancaster University and Bangor University.

Special guests included Lord Mostyn, the Lord Mayor of Liverpool and the Lord-Lieutenant of Merseyside, as well as Roger Phillips who hosted the awards.

Alastair Richards, CEO of North West Cancer Research, said: “On behalf of everyone at North West Cancer Research, I would like thank all of our fundraisers, researchers, corporate supporters and donors, whose continued efforts have guided us over the last 70 years.

“The awards allowed us to reflect on their collective achievements so far. We are currently funding 50 research projects and our network of fundraisers is growing every day, helping us continue to fund innovative life-saving research here in the North West.”
