HELEN LAUNCHES ‘WONDER’ MILK KEFIR DRINK

- Andrew Forgrave

AMUM is launching a fermented milk product in the hope it will benefit customers as much as it did her husband.

Helen Wynn says her Kefir Cymru drink is designed to help people regain their “natural inner balance” in a hectic modern world.

She first came across kefir – traditionally used to boost gut bacterial – as a way of easing husband Gwyn’s inflammatory bowel disease.

Since he began drinking it his health has significantly improved.

“He’d been managing his condition with medication,” said Helen, a TV production manager from Y Felinheli, near Bangor.

“About five years ago we came across an article about kefir, and so we set about finding how to buy some.

“It wasn’t easy as back then there wasn’t much talk about it.”

Unable to source cow’s milk kefir locally, Helen decided to produce her own, initially for Gwyn and their three children.

Now she has decided to take the next step and offer her drink to the public.

Helen combines live Kefir grains with non-homogenised local cow’s milk sourced from Llaethdy Llŷn, Pwllheli.

“I feel strongly that businesses in Wales should support each other,” she said.

Kefir is a live product, similar to live yoghurt but a drink with a tart, sour taste. Originating from the Caucasian Mountains, it contains around 30 strains of “friendly” bacteria.

While some of the health claims associated with kefir are subject to ongoing research, its probiotic properties can help restore gut balance, thus improving digestion.

“We all should have these little healthy ‘rainforests’ in our guts,” said Helen.

Bacterial balances can be distorted by diets that contain sugary or processed foods, she said.

For this reason kefir’s popularity is growing rapidly among consumers with hectic lives.

Helen said: “Today’s lifestyles can be stressful, and we eat the wrong things.

“People don’t have to deprive themselves of things, but I think they are beginning to understand their gut should be healthier than it is.”
