Bulls tame Tigers –

- Dave Jones

TWO goals from Ioan Thomas ensured Anglesey League hosts Bryngwran Bulls won 2-0 to advance to the last 16 of the NWCFA Junior Cup at the expense of Gwynedd League visitors Mynydd Tigers.

The Tigers had beaten the Bulls in the final game of last season to pip them to the island title, but Bryngwran had won all five previous encounters during the campaign, so there was plenty of history between the pair.

Both teams lined up much differently to last term and Bulls started well, Nikolas Kontodios seeing his fine free kick bounce back off the post to safety.

Mynydd player-manager and goalkeeper David Ball had a blinder in the first half, saving many good efforts, but he could not stop Bulls taking the lead on 32 minutes as winger Thomas scored from close range,

Three minutes later a fine one-two between Kontodios and Matty Roberts set up Thomas for his fifth goal in three matches.

Mynydd came out stronger for the second half, but the better chances still came Bryngwran’s way, Matt Reynolds’ header miraculously saved by Ball.

Menai Bridge Tigers saw off Denbigh Development 6-1, Dave Baston (2), Sion Hogan, Callum Davidson, Sam Roberts and Dean Redmond sharing the goals for the Gwynedd League leaders.

Scott Hughes scored a hat-trick in Arriva Bangor’s 3-1 beating of Rhos United, a Ryan Rowlands goal failed to save Cemaes Bay from a 2-1 loss against Llanfairfechan Town and Sion Morris notched a consolation for Llanfairpwll in a 5-1 reverse at Abergele.

Ash McKinstry bagged both in Llandudno Athletic’s 2-1 win against Caergybi, Dave Webb replying for the battling islanders.

Bodorgan took Rhuddlan Town to extra time before losing 6-4, Luke Allaway (2), Aron Edwards and Jordan Williams for the hosts.

Sion Davies was a hat-trick hero in Holyhead Hotspur Reserves’s 3-1 success against Machno United, while Llangoed went out 4-2 at Llansannan, Charlie McKenna and Carwyn Williams for the visitors.

Bro Goronwy v St Asaph City Reserves was postponed.
