Benllech open league account in style by thrashing Mold

-

BENLLECH Rugby Club claimed their first win of the season in WRU Division Three North when they thrashed fellow strugglers Mold seconds 40-8 last Saturday.

The visitors put over an early penalty, but the hosts composed themselves and started running good phases and building pressure. It was not long before scrum-half Alex Reese threw a magical dummy to outfox the Mold defence and run under the posts to make an easy conversion for Dyfed Roberts.

The Benllech pack were too much for Mold with scrums repeatedly turned and collapsed by the visiting side. No 8 Terry Hughes soon went over for a converted try.

Good play from the Benllech backs saw the ball moved wide with powerful runs from Gwyndaf Williams and wing Chris Ford. With good position being gained, Hughes grabbed a second try to make it 19-3 at the break.

The second half saw Benllech playing downhill. They produced great forward phases through young prop Jake Owen, Liam Morton and veteran Bill Billington. Reese soon found enough space to dart in for his second try and a well-earned and longawaited bonus point.

More pressure saw Paul Williams go over the line to make it 33-3 after the conversion. Benllech crossed again with another pick and go from second row Williams and Dyfed Roberts added the extras, taking his personal tally to five from six.

Mold nabbed a late consolation try.
