Bridge edge close game

-

MENAI Bridge edged a 24-22 success at Llangefni seconds in Division Three North.

Without a league fixture since December 1, Bridge started with a prolonged period of pressure, as their forwards pushed towards the line. A sudden change of tactics released the ball to fly-half Dion McGrath, who feigned his way over the line and converted his own try.

Llangefni raised their game and were rewarded with a penalty. Menai continued to exert pressure and, while the forwards failed to breach the defence, Pat Roberts left his wing to crash through the centre for a try. McGrath’s conversion made it 14-3.

Llangefni hit back with a converted try to cut the gap to four points at the interval.

After the break the hosts continued their possession game and veteran winger Iwan Davies scored a fine try. Bridge responded by gaining territory: a missed penalty was soon followed by a push-over try for No.8 Chris Roberts.

McGrath converted and soon followed with a penalty, putting Bridge 24-15 ahead.

Cefni worked their way upfield and a clever kick through resulted in a converted try, but Bridge held on for the final two minutes and were very relieved to hear the final whistle.

● Benllech 5 Holyhead 48 A hard-fought bonus point win for Holyhead in this Division Three North Anglesey derby. Benllech really took the game to their opponents with strong carrying and big tackling, but Caergybi had most of the answers.
